The Unreal Life of Oscar Zariski

Hoy terminé, al borde de las lágrimas, la biografía del célebre matemático Oscar Zariski escrita por Carol Parikh. Alguna vez, allá por los años 30, Oscar Zariski dijo: Geometry is the real life. El título de su biografía no podía ser más acertado.

Para aquellos que creemos en las matemáticas, una lectura como ésta motiva enormemente a buscar un lápiz y una hoja en blanco para intentar una vez más (siempre una vez más) responder aquella pregunta que ha decidido instalarse en nuestras vidas y que demanda celosamente toda nuestra atención. Volveremos a respirar cuando ella lo decida. Esta es nuestra realidad: somos sus esclavos. Las matemáticas escogieron a Oscar Zariski para resolver un ejercicio más duro e implacable: construir los fundamentos de la geometría algebraica. A él dedicó su vida entera y en buena medida lo logró.

Hoy termina una pausa que ya duró casi un par de semanas. Después de haber bebido lo suficiente para retomar energía y olvidar los momentos dificiles, estoy listo para seguir. Cierro este ciclo con palabras de un joven Oscar Zariski (¿son suyas o de todos nosotros?):

Incidentally, what is my aim? It goes without saying that mathematics will not be in the back seat. I feel exceptionally sure of that darling old lady, and I also feel exceptionally certain that she will not betray me, because I feel inside me the presence of a mathematical talent.

I have two notebooks consisting entirely of my own original mathematical work: research on number theory. Some of my results, as I found later on, were known; some apparently are new. The happiness one finds in letting one's self be carried by the current of one's thoughts! That current takes you inevitably to new results.

You begin with some question (in the present case it was a theorem of Euler), and step by step you witness the wonderful functioning of your own intellect. You stumble on new problems, which in their further development lead you to new results. Association of ideas plays here a superlative role... Well, to put it briefly: in mathematics I feel absolutely sure of myself.
